The dark side of glottal stop epenthesis in German : Comparative markedness and structure preservation

چکیده

Recent accounts of consonant epenthesis either predict the locus of and give structural motivation for epenthesis (Prince & Smolensky 1993, Alber 2001 among others), such as the requirement for syllables to start in a consonantal onset or the breaking up of a vowel sequence or they explain the choice of segment, i.e., why languages prefer the glottal stop, the coronal stop or some other consonant (Lombardi 2002) in a given environment (Uffmann in press). However, in some languages the epenthetic consonant has a special status: Because of its restricted distribution it is assumed not to be part of the underlying inventory of the language in question. One such case is the glottal stop in German, which occurs only in simple onsets in wordand foot-initial position (Wiese 2000, Alber 2001), as shown in (1ad). The glottal stop is not found in other potential environments, such as in onsets of unstressed syllables, complex onsets or codas (1e-g). This sets this segment apart from the other stops in this language (p,t,k).

To appear in the Zeitschrift für Sprachwissenschaft (2001) Regional variation at edges: glottal stop epenthesis and dissimilation in Standard and Southern varieties of German

___________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: Edges of prosodic and morphological constituents often behave differently from non-edge positions, but it is not always clear how such edge-effects are brought about. This paper is a case study of an edge-phenomenon in different varieties of German. Thus, glottal stop epenthesis is limited to edges of morpheme...

An investigation of vowel epenthesis in Chinese learners' production of German consonants

The present study investigates the influence of phonetic factors on the frequency of vowel epenthesis in the German speech of Chinese learners. The subjects were intermediate learners of German who entered Germany within five months of their study. Descriptive statistics were performed on the data collected from reading tasks, and phonetic analysis was provided to explain the phenomenon of epen...

Glottal stop detection in German-accented English using ASR

Glottal stops are sounds produced by the closing and abrupt opening of the vocal folds. In German, glottal stops are frequent before word-initial vowels and are a salient word-linking technique. For this reason, German speakers can transfer this word-linking habit to their English productions. Neither in English nor in German are glottal stops phonemes, i.e. they cannot differentiate word meani...

A Cross-Language Study of Laryngeal-Oral Coordination Across Varying Prosodic and Syllable-Structure Conditions.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to use prosodic and syllable-structure variation to probe the underlying representation of laryngeal kinematics in languages traditionally considered to differ in voicing typology (German vs. Dutch and French). Method Transillumination and videofiberendoscopic filming were used to investigate the devoicing gesture in German, Dutch, and French for material ...
